Solvay Proper

Naming • Identity

A historic building in Solvay, New York reimagined as a mixed-use space for local businesses, residential apartments, and community gatherings.

The Challenge

The project needed a name that could honor the building’s history while introducing it as a modern, multi-purpose destination.

It had to feel familiar to the local community, while also elevating perception to attract new interest and activity.

The Strategy

Develop a name rooted in place, but expansive in meaning. Position the brand as old-world and well-known, yet elevated and modern.

“Solvay Proper” connects to the larger Solvay area while establishing itself as the center of it.

The Work

Naming

Led the naming process, developing directions that balance history, local relevance, and a forward-looking, urban growth mindset.

Designed a visual identity that builds on the name, reinforcing a sense of history and permanence while supporting a range of physical space uses.
